to stick around.

So I ask you, “Sir Backpedaling Man,

what makes you happy?”

He sits down, puts his lips

to his steaming cup of soup,

and in a low sturdy voice says,

“If I could just sit down

and take in

you, me, and

those particles ballroom dancing around us

. . . if I wasn’t so scared, I would be happy.

But I’m afraid of missing you and the memories

we could’ve shared.”
